Nazirite

Nazirite

Nazirite In the OT Nazirites were ascetics who had taken a vow, or whose parents had taken a vow on their behalf, as with Samuel and Samson (1 Sam. 1: 1–11; Judg. 13: 7). They were to abstain from intoxicants, to allow their hair to grow long, and to avoid all contact with a corpse. They protested against the moral decline of civilization. John the Baptist the Baptist may have been a Nazirite; and Paul paid the expenses of four men completing vows, possibly Nazirites (Acts 21: 20–30). The resemblance of ‘Nazirite’ to ‘Nazarene’ may have carried an overtone of Jesus' consecration from the womb.
