National Theatre of the Deaf

National Theatre of the Deaf

National Theatre of the Deaf. The idea for a professional touring ensemble of deaf performers was first discussed in the 1950s but did not become a working reality until the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center took it under its aegis in 1966. The group employs an effectively dramatized version of traditional deaf sign language, but also generally includes a few nondeaf performers who serve as “speakers” and elaborate on the action. The company has made numerous national and international tours, offering both classic and original plays. It no longer is affiliated with the O'Neill Center and, located in Hartford, Connecticut, continues its impressive programs.
