National Book Awards

National Book Awards

National Book Awards, founded (1950) by the American Book Publishers Council, American Booksellers Association, and Book Manufacturers Institute, and after 1976 sponsored by the National Book Committee for the year's most distinguished works in the areas of Arts and Letters, Children's Literature, Contemporary Affairs, Fiction, History and Biography, and Poetry. Discontinued in 1979, they were replaced by The American Book Awards of the Association of American Booksellers (1980–85) with numerous categories for hardcover and paperback works, but many authors made strong objection to the criteria of selection. Since 1985 again called the National Book Awards, sponsored by the National Book Foundation, the awards are made in the areas of Fiction, Nonfiction, and Poetry. The sponsoring organizations have also awarded an annual National Medal for Literature.
