Nathanael
Nathanael A disciple greeted by Jesus as an Israelite without guile (John 1: 47) in an obvious reference to Israel (Jacob) of Genesis, who was notoriously a deceiver. Jacob dreamt of a ladder from earth to heaven (Gen. 28: 12) and Jesus tells Nathanael that the Son of Man is now to be that ladder (John 1: 51). The identification of Nathanael with Bartholomew, though often made, has no basis.
