Nara period
Nara period (710–94). One of the earlier periods of Japanese Buddhism, which derives its name from the fact that the capital of the empire was located in the city of Nara at that time. Nara Buddhism is characterized by the scholastic and disciplinary endeavours of the Six Schools of Nara Buddhism. These concentrated on studying and coming to terms with the volumes of Buddhist literature that found their way across the sea from China at this time. The Buddhism of this period was characterized by an almost complete devotion of its energy to the needs of the aristocracy, as well as to courtly religious practices aimed at the protection and welfare of the nation.
