Naomi Mitchison

Naomi Mitchison 1897–1999, British writer, b. Scotland, educated at Oxford; daughter of the biologist J. S. Haldane . She wrote many types of novels on a variety of subjects. They include historical novels set in ancient Greece and Rome, such as The Bull Calves (1945); fantasies, such as Graeme and the Dragon (1954); and documentary novels set in Scotland or Africa, such as Swan's Road (1954). She was active in local government in Scotland (1947–1976) and was tribal adviser to the Bakgatla of Botswana.

Mitchison, Naomi (Mary Margaret)

Mitchison, Naomi (Mary Margaret) (1897–1999), novelist and sister of J. B. S. Haldane. Her many works of fiction include The Corn King and the Spring Queen (1931), a historical novel, The Blood of the Martyrs (1939), and The Big House (1950). Her non-fiction works, including three volumes of autobiography (1973–9), illustrate her commitment to the progressive political and social causes of the intellectual circles in which she moved.
