Graves, Nancy
Graves, Nancy (1940–1995). American sculptor and painter, born at Pittsfield, Massachusetts. She studied at Vassar College and Yale University and won a scholarship for painting that took her to Paris, 1964–5. Later in 1965 she visited North Africa and the Middle East, and in 1965–6 she lived in Florence, then settled in New York. In Florence she began making the lifesize, realistically painted sculptures of Bactrian camels for which she is best known; Camels VI, VII, and VIII (1968–9), are in the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa. Graves also produced abstract sculpture in painted bronze, abstract paintings, and films. She was married to Richard Serra.
