Nan

Nan, China, Thailand 1. China (Sichuan): because this river was difficult to ford it was given the name ‘Difficult River’ from nán ‘difficult’; however, it was also called the ‘Southern River’ from the homonym nán ‘southern’ because the river lay south of Ba mountain. The name ‘Southern River’ was formally adopted during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644).2. Thailand: a river and a town. It was an independent kingdom as Meuang Nan. In the 14th century it became a principality in the Kingdom of Lan na and renamed Chiang Klang ‘Middle City’ because it is approximately half‐way between Chiang Mai and Chiang Thong (Louangphrabang in Laos). It is now named after the Nan River.
