Namibe
Namibe, Angola Moçâmedes/Mossamedes A province and a town founded by Brazilians c.1849 and named after the Baron of Mossamedes, governor of Portuguese West Africa (1784–90). The present name, adopted in 1982, comes from the Namib Desert which is said to mean ‘Land where nothing grows’.

Namibe , formerly Mossamedes , town (1987 est. pop. 77,000), SW Angola, a port on the Atlantic Ocean. Iron ore is the leading export; sisal, cotton, tobacco, frozen meat, hides, and skins are also significant. |
