nain
nain. Fearsome, demon-like creature of Breton folklore. Black and menacing, the nain peers down at travellers like a gargoyle. His hands are feline claws, his feet hooves like a satyr, and under his dark elf-locks his small red eyes gleam like carbuncles. While he haunts ancient dolmens, especially in Morbihan, built by a vanished race, he may also encounter mortals on lonely heaths and unfrequented roads. Wednesday is his favourite day, and his great nocturnal festival is held on the first Wednesday in May. Nains were thought to have originated in the cabalistic alphabet carved in several megalithic monuments. Like the gorics, nains are the guardians of hidden treasure.
