Mūla-sarvāstivāda
Mūla-sarvāstivāda. As explained by later commentators, an appellation adopted by the Buddhist Sarvāstivāda school some time in the 7th century to distinguish it from three subschools that had detached themselves from it by that time. The term mūla (Skt., root) indicates that the Sarvāstivāda was the parent school from which the others were descended, although it is thought by some to have been an alternative name for the Sautrāntikas, a group within the Sarvāstivāda which did not accept the centrality accorded to the Mahāvibhāṣā and its privileging of Abhidharma. Some scholars believe that the term Mūla-sarvāstivāda is simply an alternative designation for the Sarvāstivāda school, although their Āgamas are different. Others suggest that 19 Gandhāri Sārvastivādins called themselves Mūla-Sarvāstivāda or Sautrāntika in contrast to the Kashmiri Sārvāstivādins who were Vaibhāṣikas. The Vinaya of this school, which substantially survives in Sanskrit, was later adopted as the standard monastic code in Tibet.
