Mukan Fumon

Mukan Fumon

Mukan Fumon (1212–91). A Japanese Rinzai zen monk and the first abbot of the Nanzen Monastery. This monastery had been established when the Emperor Kameyama converted an imperial palace on the outskirts of Kyoto into a Zen hall. However, when he tried to meditate there, he was frightened away by ghosts. After many attempts to exorcise the spirits failed, the emperor called upon Mukan, a disciple of Enni Ben'en (1202–80), to resolve the problem. Mukan arrived with several disciples, and after one night of group Zen meditation, the spirits appeared to be gone, and the precincts were quiet thereafter. The emperor gratefully appointed him the founding abbot of the monastery, but Mukan died within the year.
