Mourts Relation

Mourt's Relation

Mourt's Relation, journal of the voyage of the Mayflower, record of its Compact, and description of the earliest days of Plymouth Colony. This anonymous document, published in England (1622) as A Relation or Journall of the Beginning and Proceedings of the English Plantation Setled at Plimoth in New England, has received its usual name from the signature “G. Mourt,” attributed to George Morton, who at that time used the name Mourt. It may be the work of Edward Winslow and William Bradford, with Morton merely acting as publisher, or a compilation by Morton of their narratives and information from other colonists. This first account of the Plymouth settlement is a vivid piece of prose, but the fact that it consists of extemporaneous jottings has caused it to be overshadowed by subsequent works.

Mourt's Relation

MOURT'S RELATION

MOURT'S RELATION, printed in London in 1622, a valuable source of information on the Pilgrims' first months in America, was naively propagandist as it described the "safe arival" of these "English Planters" and their "joyful building of … the now well defended Towne of New Plimoth." G. Mourt, signer of the recommendatory preface, is identified as George Morton, who settled in Plymouth in 1623. Most scholars have taken William Bradford and Edward Winslow to be the chief authors of the book.
