Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories
Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories (MSSSO) Two observatories owned and operated by the Australian National University, Canberra. Mount Stromlo Observatory, founded in 1924 as a solar observatory, lies 11 km west of Canberra at an altitude of 770 m. In 2003 January, fire damaged much of the observatory and its historic telescopes. As a replacement, a new robotically controlled 1.35‐m SkyMapper telescope was due to be opened in 2007 to conduct the Stromlo Southern Sky Survey. SkyMapper is located at Siding Spring Observatory but controlled from Mt Stromlo. Siding Spring Observatory was founded in 1962 as a field station of Mount Stromlo. http://www.mso.anu.edu.au/about_us/msopage.php
