Nebo
Nebo.
1. From Mount Nebo, perhaps modern Jebel Neba just west of Hesh-bon, Moses viewed the Promised Land across the Jordan before he died (see Pisgah). Later tradition tells of Jeremiah hiding the ark of the covenant on Mount Nebo. 2. Nebo is also the name of a town near Mount Nebo in territory allotted to the tribe of Reuben. Israel's enemy Moab often held this region; hence the prophetic oracles against Nebo. The Moabite Stone hints at an important early Iron Age sanctuary of Yahweh here. 3. In Isaiah 46.1, Nebo refers to the Babylonian god of writing, Nabu. Mary Joan Winn Leith |
