Mosses from an Old Manse
Mosses from an Old Manse, tales and sketches written by Hawthorne during his residence (1842–46) at the Old Manse in Concord. They were published in two volumes (1846), with an introductory essay, The Old Manse, followed by 25 short stories and historical sketches. Among them are historical pieces, like “Roger Malvin's Burial”: satirical allegories, like “The Celestial Railroad”; and allegorical tales of the supernatural, like “Young Goodman Brown,” “Rappaccini's Daughter,” “The Birthmark,” and “The Artist of the Beautiful.”
