Moschus

Moschus, John

Moschus, John (b. c.550; d. 619 or 634), spiritual writer. About 575 he retired to a monastery near Jerusalem; later, he travelled widely, visiting or settling at various monastic centres. His Pratum Spirituale contains a large collection of anecdotes on the monastic life; it became very popular as a devotional manual.

Moschus

Moschus , fl. c.150 BC, Greek bucolic poet of the school of Theocritus. He is called a Syracusan and lived in Alexandria. Among his few extant pieces is an idyl on Europa. Although Lament for Bion, a beautiful dirge has traditionally been ascribed to Moschus, it is probably of later date.

Moschus

Moschus (fl. c.150 bc), a pastoral poet of Syracuse. The beautiful Lament for Bion, doubtfully attributed to Moschus, is a dirge for the author's friend and teacher. There is an echo of it in Milton's Lycidas, in Shelley's Adonais, and in M. Arnold's ‘Thyrsis’.
