Mopti

Mopti, Mali Lying on three islands at the confluence of the Niger and Bani Rivers, the name means ‘Little Contact’ from the Mande mi ‘contact’ and piti ‘little’ or ‘unimportant’. Originally a small fishing village, it was usually no more than a brief halt for those travelling along the rivers.

Mopti

Mopti , city (1993 pop. 75,000), central Mali, a port at the confluence of the Niger and Bani rivers. The city is built on three islets linked by dikes; one dike, 8 mi (12.9 km) long, connects the islets with the river bank. Mopti is the market center for a region where rice, cotton, peanuts, and cassava are produced and cattle are raised.
