Montgomery, UK, USA 1. UK (Wales): the Welsh name is Trefaldwyn ‘Homestead of Baldwin’, a Norman knight who recaptured the castle from the Welsh, from tref ‘homestead’. The English name honours a Norman, Roger de Montgomery (d. 1093?), who fought against the English at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and was rewarded with the title of Earl of Chichester and Arundel in 1067; in 1071 he was given the more important earldom of Shrewsbury close to the Welsh border. He built a castle here in the 11th century by which a village developed. The present town dates from c.1223 when Henry III (1207–72), King of England (1216–72), built a, now‐ruined, castle about a mile (1.5 km) from the site of the Norman castle. In 1974 the former county of Montgomeryshire was subsumed into the new county of Powys.2. USA (Alabama): founded in 1819 and named after the Irish‐born General Richard Montgomery (1738–75), a commander during the American War of Independence (1775–83) who was killed in 1775 leading an unsuccessful American assault on Quebec. Twelve other states have cities with this name, many in tribute to him.
