monogamy The exclusive pairing of a male with a female for the purpose of mating (i.e. neither mates with any individual other than the partner). Usually the bond operates through the breeding season and in some cases it may extend through the adult life of the two individuals.

monogamy A system in which one man marries one woman. Where partners divorce and marry other partners, occasionally repeating the pattern more than once, the term ‘serial monogamy’ may be used.
