Monodrama
Monodrama, short solo piece for one actor or actress supported by silent figures or by a chorus. It is sometimes referred to as a melodrama on account of its musical accompaniment. It was popularized in Germany between 1775 and 1780 by the actor Johann Christian Brandes (1735–99) who developed the lyrical element introduced into German drama by the poet Klopstock and intensified by the influence of Rousseau's Pygmalion. The Duologue, a similar compilation, had two speaking characters. Both types of entertainment, which were useful in filling out the triple bill then in vogue, frequently consisted of scenes extracted and adapted from longer dramas, somewhat in the style of the earlier English droll.
