Mohegan (Or Monhegan) Indians
Mohegan (Or Monhegan) Indians, Algonquian tribe of Connecticut, united with the Pequot under Sassacus, and rebelled against him under the leadership of Uncas. They were allied with the English, and after the death of King Philip (1676) became the only important tribe south of Maine. They finally settled on a reservation near Norwich. Samson Occom was a member of the tribe. In The Last of the Mohicans, Cooper confuses Mahicans with Mohegans. The Mohegan figure in Holdfast Gaines by Odell Shepard and W.O. Shepard.

Monhegan
Monhegan , island, 2.5 sq mi (6.4 sq km), c.10 mi (16 km) off the coast of S Maine, settled c.1622. It is a summer resort favored by artists for its scenery. In the War of 1812 the U.S.S. Enterprise defeated the H.M.S. Boxer southeast of the island. |
