Mireille
Mireille ♀ French: apparently first used, in the Provençal form Mireio, as the title of a verse romance by the poet Frédéric Mistral (1830–1914). The name is probably a derivative of Provençal mirar ‘to admire’ (compare Miranda). The poet himself declared it to be a form of Miriam, but this was apparently in order to overcome the objections of a priest to baptizing his god-daughter with a non-liturgical name. The name is also used occasionally in the English-speaking world.
