Milford Haven
Milford Haven (Aberdaugleddau), Wales/UK De Milverdico portu, Mellferth, Aber Dav Gleddyf ‘Harbour at Milford’. The modern town was founded only in 1793 by a deep, and already much used, natural harbour—‘haven’—on a tidal estuary. Milford ‘Sandy Inlet’ comes from the Old Scandinavian melr ‘sand’ and fjọrthr ‘inlet’ or ‘fjord’. The Welsh name means ‘Mouth of the two Rivers Cleddau’, the name meaning ‘sword’. The ‘two’ rivers referred to the Eastern and Western branches.

Milford Haven
Milford Haven (Aberdaugleddau) Pemb. de Milverdico portu c.1191, Mellferth 1207, Milford 1219, Aber Dav Gleddyf 15th cent. ‘Harbour at Milford’. The original site was Milford, ‘sandy inlet’ (OScand. melr + fjǫrthr). English Haven was then added when the meaning of this was forgotten. The Welsh name means ‘mouth of the two Rivers Cleddau’ (Welsh aber + dau). The river Cleddau, divided here into the Eastern Cleddau and Western Cleddau, is the Welsh word cleddau meaning ‘sword’.

Milford Haven
Milford Haven Welsh Aberdaugleddau, town (1981 pop. 13,883), Pembrokeshire, SW Wales. It is a seaport on the northern side of the estuary called Milford Haven. The bay forms a natural harbor that can handle large oil tankers, making the town a key oil port and refining center. Other imports are cattle, food, and fertilizer. From early times the town was a point for trade with Ireland. Henry II invaded Ireland from Milford Haven in 1172; Henry Tudor (who became Henry VII) landed there from France in 1485. |
