Michiel Janszen van Mierevelt

Michiel Janszen van Mierevelt , 1567–1641, Dutch portrait painter. He was court painter to the house of Orange, working chiefly in Delft and at The Hague. Mierevelt had many pupils and assistants, whose numerous, and usually inferior, works bear his name. His thousands of portraits included those of nearly all the major court figures. The Rijks Museum and the Metropolitan Museum have examples of his works. His son and pupil, Pieter van Mierevelt, 1595–1623, painted portraits in the manner of his father. His Anatomy Lesson is in the hospital at Delft.

Miereveld, Michiel van

Miereveld, Michiel van (or Michiel van Mierevelt) (b Delft, 1 May 1567; d Delft, 27 June 1641). Dutch portrait painter, active mainly in Delft and The Hague. He was court painter to the House of Orange, highly successful, and very prolific: Sandrart reports that Mierevelt himself estimated that he made about 10,000 portraits. Even though this figure must be a considerable exaggeration, his portraits certainly tend to be dull and formulaic; however, they are meticulously crafted and of great value as historical records.
