Mercury Theatre

Mercury Theatre, Auckland, New Zealand. Built as a cinema in 1910, this was bought in 1968 by the Auckland Theatre Trust to serve the theatrical needs of the city; the main auditorium seats 672, the smaller studio theatre 184. The two theatres have enabled the Mercury to present a wide repertory from opera to musicals, drama including García Lorca's Yerma, Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge, and Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, and contemporary plays such as David Hare's The Secret Rapture. The theatre also stages a number of new local plays. It has a full-time acting company of 16.
