me·nor·ah / məˈnôrə/ • n. (the Menorah) a sacred candelabrum with seven branches used in the Temple in Jerusalem, originally that made by the craftsman Bezalel and placed in the sanctuary of the Tabernacle (Exod. 37:17–24). ∎ a candelabrum used in Jewish worship, esp. one with eight branches and a central socket used at Hanukkah.

Menorah (Heb., ‘candelabrum’). Jewish seven-branch candlestick, which from early times became a symbol of Jewish identity. According to the Hebrew scriptures, the menorah was an important furnishing of the tabernacle in the wilderness and of the Temple in Jerusalem. In 1948 it became the official symbol of the State of Israel. See also MAGEN DAVID.

menorah Sacred, seven-branched candelabra that became a worldwide symbol of Judaism. It is rich in symbolic meaning: some interpret it in terms of the seven planets, the tree of life, or the six-day creation of the universe with the centre shaft representing the Sabbath.
