Menai Strait
Menai Strait , channel of the Irish Sea, 14 mi (23 km) long and from 200 yd (183 m) to 2 mi (3.2 km) wide, between the island of Anglesey and mainland Gwynedd, NW Wales. Thomas Telford's suspension bridge (1826; rebuilt 1938–41) carries the road from Bangor on the mainland to Anglesey, over the strait, and Robert Stephenson's tubular bridge (1850) carries a railroad. Caernarvon is on the strait; Llanfair-Pwllgwyngyll is nearby. |

Menai Bridge
Menai Bridge (Porthaethwy) Angl. ‘Bridge over the Menai Strait’. A bridge was built across the Menai Strait in 1826 and the town developed soon after. The name of the strait itself is of uncertain origin. The Welsh name means ‘ferry of Daethwy’ (Welsh porth), from a tribal name.

Caernarfon
Caernarfon, Wales/UK Kairarvon, Kaer yn Arvon ‘Fort in Arfon’ from caer, yn ‘in’ and the district of Arfon ‘opposite Anglesey’ from ar ‘over’ and Fôn, a form of Môn, the Welsh name for Anglesey. It stands on the shore of the Menai Strait.
