Menahem
Menahem ♂ Jewish: name meaning ‘comforter’ in Hebrew. It was borne in the Scriptures by an evil king of Israel who massacred pregnant women (2 Kings 15:14–18), but the name has nevertheless always been a popular one among Jews; in earlier times it was given particularly to a child born after the death of a sibling and seen as a comfort to his parents. See also Mendel.
Variant: Menachem. |

Menahem
Menahem , d. c.737 BC, king of Israel (c.749-c.737 BC). He was governor of Tirzah and murdered Shallum for the throne of Samaria. Menahem was made a tributary by Tiglath-pileser III of Assyria, who helped him to gain his throne. The book of Kings represents him unfavorably. His son, Pekahiah, succeeded him. |
