Melchizedek

Melchizedek

Melchizedek King of Salem (Jerusalem).

After Abraham's victory over Chedorlaomer he was greeted by Melchizedek

(Gen. 14: 17 ff.) and in return was given a tenth of the captured booty. Described as ‘priest of God most High’ who brought out bread and wine, Melchizedek became a powerful model in subsequent Hebrew and Christian tradition. David inherited Melchizedek's dynasty (Ps. 110: 4) and Christ inherited his high priesthood, which is superior to that of the Levitical priesthood (Heb. 5: 6 ff.; 6: 19–7: 28). From about 200 CE Melchizedek's offering of bread and wine was taken as prefiguring the Christian Eucharist.

Melchizedek

Melchizedek (Heb., ‘my king is Zedek/righteous’). Biblical king of Salem. According to Genesis 14. 18–20, Melchizedek welcomed the patriarch Abraham after he defeated the four kings, and he is described as ‘a priest of God Most High’. In Psalm 110. 4, it is written, ‘the Lord has sworn and will not repent, you are priest for ever after the manner of Melchizedek’. It seems likely, therefore, that David adopted a sacral kingship when he captured Jerusalem, and that these passages reflect a positive assessment of this move against those who protested against it as innovation.

Melchizedek or Melchisedec [Heb.,=king of righteousness], in the Bible, king of Salem and "priest of the most high God." He blessed Abraham after the defeat of Chedorlaomer, and Abraham gave him tithes from the enemy's spoils. Later, Melchizedek is regarded as an eternal priest, typifying the priesthood of the future Messiah. In the Dead Sea Scrolls , Melchizedek, as God's eschatological agent, effects the destruction of the angel Belial and the wicked spirits in league with him.

Melchizedek

Melchizedek. According to Gen. 14: 18, the ‘King of Salem’ and ‘Priest of the Most High God’ who offered Abraham bread and wine as he returned from battle. The author of Heb. (6: 20, 7: 1 ff.) regarded his priesthood as prefiguring that of Christ; another Christian tradition has seen in his offering a type of the Eucharist.
