Mdina
Mdina, Malta Malet, Notabile The original name loosely means ‘shelter’ or ‘protected place’, a reference to the Knights of Malta, one of whose duties was to care for sick and wounded Christian pilgrims. The Knights moved to Malta in 1530. The present name is derived from the Arabic madīnah ‘town’ or ‘city’. It was the capital of Malta during the 15th and 16th centuries.
