Mathew

Mathew

Mathew, prominent Catholic landed family in Co. Tipperary. George Mathew of Glamorgan (d. 1636) married Elizabeth, widow of Viscount Thurles. The protection of the duke of Ormond, whose brother had been Lady Thurles's first husband, ensured that the family emerged from the Restoration with its lands intact. Lady Thurles's second son George Mathew (d. 1689/90) subsequently managed Ormond's estates. In the first half of the 18th century the estate was divided between three branches of the family. The head of one of these, George Mathew (d. 1738), conformed to the Church of Ireland and was MP for Co. Tipperary in 1713, when he sat as a Tory and supporter of the second duke of Ormond, and again in 1727–36. The other two branches remained Catholic. In 1760 the whole estate came into the hand of Thomas Mathew (d. 1777), who was returned as MP for Co. Tipperary in 1761. Although he had converted to the Church of Ireland in 1755, his election was perceived as a victory for a crypto‐Catholic interest. The resulting increase in sectarian tension provides the background for the judicial murder of Nicholas Sheehy and others during the Whiteboy outbreak that followed shortly after. Thomas Mathew's son Francis Mathew (1744–1806) followed him as MP for Tipperary. In 1783 he became Baron Landaff of Thomastown, and in 1797 earl of Landaff.
