Brown, Mather (b Boston, 7 Oct. 1761; d London, 25 May 1831). American painter who settled in England in 1781. He had lessons from Gilbert Stuart as a boy and studied with Benjamin West in London. Initially he had great success as a portraitist, especially with American visitors to England, but later he became obsessed with painting grandiose historical and religious pictures that proved unsaleable and he died in poverty.
