Mateus Vicente de Oliveira

Oliveira, Mateus Vicente de

Oliveira, Mateus Vicente de (1706–85). Portuguese Rococo architect, who worked under Ludovice at first, adopting the latter's grand manner, and then evolved a much more exquisite style, of which the Palácio Nacional, Queluz, near Lisbon (1747–52), is a good example, with its swagged and garlanded window-heads. He was responsible for the Basilica da Estrêla, Lisbon (1779–90).
