Master of the Revels

Master of the Revels

Master of the Revels, official of the Royal household, first appointed in 1494 to serve under the Lord Chamberlain in connection with entertainments at the Court of Henry VII. At first a temporary position, it became in 1545 a permanent appointment held by Sir Thomas Cawarden, who supervised the revels for the coronation of Elizabeth I in 1558. The Revels Office then became concerned mainly with censorship. As unofficial Master, Thomas Blagrove served the Revels Office faithfully for 57 years, but eventually the post went to a courtier who did little but license plays for performance and collect the fees charged for all public productions. The best-known Master was Sir Henry Herbert (1596–1673), appointed in 1622, whose records are an important source of information on the theatre of his time. On the passing of the Licensing Act of 1737 the censorship of plays (abolished in 1968) became the direct responsibility of the Lord Chamberlain, and the old office of Master of the Revels became extinct.
