Master Francke

Master Francke

Master Francke German painter, active in Hamburg in the early 15th century. His major surviving work is an altarpiece (now fragmentary) for the guild of merchants trading with England (1424, Kunsthalle, Hamburg), showing scenes from Christ's Passion and incidents from the life of St Thomas à Becket. Francke was a leading exponent of International Gothic in northern Germany and he had wide influence there and along the shores of the Baltic.

Master Francke

Master Francke. German painter, active in Hamburg in the early 15th century. His major surviving work is an altarpiece (now fragmentary) for the guild of merchants trading with England (1424, Kunsthalle, Hamburg), showing Passion scenes and incidents from the life of St Thomas Becket. Francke was a leading exponent of International Gothic in northern Germany and he had wide influence there and along the shores of the Baltic.
