Mascarene Islands , in the Indian Ocean, E of Madagascar. They include Mauritius , Réunion , and Rodriguez . Apparently known to the Arabs, they were rediscovered by the Portuguese at the beginning of the 16th cent. The islands are named for Pedro Mascarenhas, who visited them c.1512.

Mascarene Islands A collective name for the islands of Mauritius, Réunion, and Rodrigues that lie east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. The name is derived from that of a 16th‐century Portuguese explorer, Pedro de Mascarenhas, who discovered Réunion c.1513. Rodrigues is a dependency of Mauritius while Réunion is a separate state.
