Mascarene Islands
Mascarene Islands A collective name for the islands of Mauritius, Réunion, and Rodrigues that lie east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. The name is derived from that of a 16th‐century Portuguese explorer, Pedro de Mascarenhas, who discovered Réunion c.1513. Rodrigues is a dependency of Mauritius while Réunion is a separate state.

Mascarene Islands
Mascarene Islands , in the Indian Ocean, E of Madagascar. They include Mauritius , Réunion , and Rodriguez . Apparently known to the Arabs, they were rediscovered by the Portuguese at the beginning of the 16th cent. The islands are named for Pedro Mascarenhas, who visited them c.1512. |
