Mary of Gueldres
Mary of Gueldres (d. 1463), queen of James II of Scotland. Daughter of Duke Arnold of Gueldres and niece of Philip the Good of Burgundy, Mary became James's queen in July 1449, and bore him at least seven children, of whom five survived—Mary, James (later James III), Alexander (duke of Albany), John ( earl of Mar), and Margaret. After a decade of producing children, Mary took control of government after her husband's death at Roxburgh (August 1460), and showed herself an able diplomat, negotiating first with the Lancastrians (to obtain Berwick in 1461), and then switching sides to the victorious Yorkists. Mary founded Trinity College, Edinburgh, and built Ravenscraig castle, Fife.
