Routh, Martin Joseph

Routh, Martin Joseph (1755–1854), president of Magdalen College, Oxford, for 63 years, edited the Gorgias and Eutheydemus of Plato, and Reliquiae Sacrae (1814–43), a collection of writings of ecclesiastical authors of the 2nd and 3rd cents. His long life and literary experience lend weight to his famous utterance: ‘I think, Sir, you will find it a very good practice always to verify your references.’

Routh, Martin Joseph

Routh, Martin Joseph (1755–1854), president of Magdalen College, Oxford, from 1791. It was he who advised S. Seabury, when sent to Europe to inaugurate an episcopal succession for the American (Anglican) Church, to seek it from the Scottish Episcopal Church. Routh's Reliquiae Sacrae, an edition of scattered pre-Nicene patristic texts, was published in 1814–18.
