Mark di Suvero

di Suvero, Mark

di Suvero, Mark (1933– ). American sculptor, born in Shanghai, the son of an Italian naval officer who was stationed there. He migrated with his family to to California in 1941 and he majored in philosophy at the University of California at Berkeley, also studying at the California School of Fine Arts. In 1957 he moved to New York and had his first one-man show at the Green Gallery there in 1960. His work consists of assemblages of beams, tyres, pieces of furniture, chains, and other scrap from demolished buildings or junkyards and has tended to become increasingly large in scale. His constructions sometimes contain makeshift seats inviting the spectator to participate in the space and tension of the work. In 1964–5, following his gradual recovery from a near-fatal accident that hindered his movements, he began making large outdoor sculptures. As a protest against the USA's involvement in the Vietnam War he built a huge Peace Tower in Los Angeles in 1966, and in 1971 his political views led him to move into self-imposed exile in Europe, where he exhibited in several countries. He returned to the USA in 1975 and in the same year he created a series of outdoor, environmental sculptures for five New York boroughs. His later work has tended to become more linear, with greater structural clarity, using industrially manufactured units such as I-beams. In the second edition of his A History of Modern Art (1977), H. H. Arnason wrote of di Suvero that his ‘unlimited imagination and originality, as well as the increasing scale and power of his works, have resulted in his emergence in the 1970s as one of the foremost monumental sculptors … More than any other American sculptor di Suvero, in his imaginative use of gigantic scale, is the heir of and successor to the late David Smith.’ Curiously, in the third edition of the book (1986) this passage is deleted and di Suvero gets only a passing mention.
