Helprin, Mark
Helprin, Mark (1947–), novelist. A native of Ossining, N.Y., after graduation from Harvard, Helprin served in the Israeli army. His fiction has been called “moral fantasy.” Ellis Island and Other Stories (1981) mixes realism with fantasy, as do the stories in A Dove of the East (1975). Winter's Tale (1983) established his reputation. Combining history, myth, and fable, it is a visionary epic of New York City trying to free itself from crime and poverty. A Soldier of the Great War (1992) tells of the fantastic adventures—in flashback—of an Italian officer on the Austria‐Italy front in World War I. It is a mainly lyrical, sometimes harrowing story told by a narrator, now an old man, to a boy as they trudge from the outskirts of Rome to a small village in the mountains. He collaborated on an acclaimed trilogy for children—Swan Lake (1989), A City in Winter (1996), and The Veil of Snows (1997)—with the illustrator Chris Van Allsburgh.
