Mariánské Láznĕ
Mariánské Láznĕ, Czech Republic Ušovické Láznĕ, Marienbad With numerous mineral springs, both the previous German name, adopted in 1808, and the present Czech name from the plural of lázěn ‘bath’ mean ‘Mary's Springs’. A picture of the Virgin Mary was suspended from a tree near to one of the local mineral springs as an expression of thanks for recovery from illness by an unknown patient. Maria Theresa† ordered that the local springs should be examined as a source for table salt. They were not suitable, but her name has been associated, wrongly, with the place.
