battle of Marengo
battle of Marengo a major engagement of the French Revolutionary Wars , fought on June 14, 1800, at the village of Marengo in Piedmont, N Italy. Determined to throw the Austrians back from positions they had recently regained in Lombardy and Piedmont, Napoleon Bonaparte gathered an army at Dijon and crossed into Italy by way of the Great St. Bernard Pass. A surprise attack by the Austrians under Baron Melas at Marengo caught Bonaparte with his forces scattered. A French defeat seemed imminent until a division that Bonaparte had sent off under General Desaix de Veygoux returned in time to lead a successful counterattack. The French lost about 5,800 men, the Austrians 9,400. |

Marengo
Marengo a decisive French victory of Napoleon's campaign in Italy in 1800, close to the village of Marengo, near Turin. After military reverses had all but destroyed French power in Italy, Napoleon crossed the Alps to defeat and capture an Austrian army, a victory which led to Italy coming under French control again.
Marengo also designates chicken or veal sautéed in oil, served with a tomato sauce, and traditionally garnished with eggs and crayfish. The dish is said to have been served to Napoleon after his victory at Marengo. |

Marengo
Marengo , village, Piedmont, NW Italy, near Alessandria. It was the site of a famous battle (June 14, 1800) between the French under Napoleon Bonaparte and the Austrians under Melas. Melas had almost won when Desaix arrived with fresh troops to bolster the French; Desaix lost his life, but the Austrians were completely defeated and retired to the Mincio. |

marengo Chicken or veal sautéed in oil, and cooked in a sauce of white wine, tomatoes, mushroom, and garlic; said to have been invented in 1800 by Napoleon's chef after the battle of Marengo in Italy.
