Marengo

Marengo a decisive French victory of Napoleon's campaign in Italy in 1800, close to the village of Marengo, near Turin. After military reverses had all but destroyed French power in Italy, Napoleon crossed the Alps to defeat and capture an Austrian army, a victory which led to Italy coming under French control again.

Marengo also designates chicken or veal sautéed in oil, served with a tomato sauce, and traditionally garnished with eggs and crayfish. The dish is said to have been served to Napoleon after his victory at Marengo.

Determined to throw the Austrians back from positions they had recently regained in Lombardy and Piedmont, Napoleon Bonaparte gathered an army at Dijon and crossed into Italy by way of the Great St. Bernard Pass. A surprise attack by the Austrians under Baron Melas at Marengo caught Bonaparte with his forces scattered. A French defeat seemed imminent until a division that Bonaparte had sent off under General Desaix de Veygoux returned in time to lead a successful counterattack. The French lost about 5,800 men, the Austrians 9,400.
