Cato, Marcus Porcius

Cato, Marcus Porcius (or Cato the Younger) (95–46 BC) The great-grandson of Cato the Elder. He was known posthumously as ‘Uticensis’ after the place of his death. A conservative republican, he long opposed POMPEY, but finally sided with him against Julius CAESAR. He committed suicide at Utica in northern Africa after Caesar's victory at Thapsus, rather than seek Caesar's pardon.

Cato, Marcus Porcius

Cato, Marcus Porcius (234–149 bc), Roman statesman, orator, and writer, known as Cato the Elder or Cato the Censor. As censor he initiated a vigorous programme of reform, and attempted to stem the growing influence of Greek culture; he was also an implacable enemy of Carthage, ending every speech he made in the Senate with the words Delenda est Carthago.

Cato, Marcus Porcius

Cato, Marcus Porcius (or Cato the Elder) (c.234–149 BC) Roman statesman. As consul in 195 Cato suppressed revolt in former Carthaginian Spain with severity; as censor in 184 he was equally severe against private extravagance. Cato prosecuted SCIPIO AFRICANUS for corruption.
