Mar del Plata
Mar del Plata, Argentina Nuestra Señora del Pilar, La Peregrina Founded as a mission station called ‘Our Lady of the Pillar’ in 1746 after the cathedral in Saragossa, Spain, dedicated to the Virgin (Mary) of the Pillar; she is said to have appeared standing on a pillar. After the mission had been abandoned in 1751, a fishing village emerged here in 1856 and was called La Peregrina ‘The Pilgrim’. The present city was founded in 1874 and called ‘Sea of the Plata’, that is, the River Plate.

Mar del Plata
Mar del Plata , city (1991 pop. 519,707), E central Argentina, on the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the most popular seaside resorts in South America. Fishing and fish processing are also important industries. The city was founded in the 1850s. It has two universities. |
