Malvolio
Malvolio in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night (1601), the Puritan steward of Olivia who through his consciousness of moral superiority and personal worth is tricked by Sir Toby Belch and his companions into believing that Olivia is in love with him; the behaviour into which they persuade him leads to his being confined for insanity.
