Malachi
Malachi In Hebrew, ‘my messenger’; the title given to the last book of the OT, taken from the words in 3: 1. The book itself is anonymous. Its date of composition is estimated at about 450 BCE, after the restoration of the Temple (515 BCE) but before the reforms of Nehemiah (445 BCE) and Ezra. The author was closely connected with the Temple and its rituals and he deplores a lack of reverence (1: 14) in the performance of sacrifices (1: 8) and payment of tithes (3: 8). The priests have so signally failed that God has withdrawn his favour from the people of the covenant (2: 2). The people have been equally faithless and given to offering in sacrifice animals that were feeble or defective (1: 13), and those who succeeded in riding out the economic depression were oppressing the helpless (3: 5). There was a remedy: return to the Lord (3: 7). Then there will be abundant blessings (3: 10) for God-fearers, but evildoers will be destroyed (3: 13–4: 3). The day of judgement will be preceded by the advent of the prophet Elijah (4: 5), so that the last three verses of the OT are taken up in the NT by the accounts of John the Baptist (Mark 1: 2 and Matt. 17: 12).

Malachi
Malachi ♂ Biblical name, borne by the last of the twelve minor prophets of the Old Testament; he foretold the coming of Christ and his name means, appropriately, ‘my messenger’ in Hebrew. The name was adopted by the Puritans in the 17th century, but until a recent modest revival was rarely used among English speakers outside Ireland. In Ireland, written Malachy, it is a traditional name, representing an adaptation of more than one medieval Gaelic name to the biblical name. It was used to refer to an Irish king who defeated the Norse invaders in an important battle. His baptismal name was Maoileachlainn ‘devotee of St Seachnall or Secundinus’, but in medieval sources telling of his life this has already been altered to coincide with that of the biblical prophet.

Malachi
Malachi , book of the Bible, the last book in the order of the Authorized Version and 12th of the books of the Minor Prophets. Its title Malachi is taken from the opening verse of chapter 3 and means "my messenger." On internal evidence the book, a collection of prophetic oracles, is usually dated c.460 BC, shortly before the reforms of Nehemiah and Ezra. After a protestation of God's love for Israel, the prophet rebukes the priests for their negligence and the people for their foreign marriages. Finally, there is a prophecy of the coming Day of Judgment, anticipated by the appearance of a messenger and the reappearance of Elijah.

Malachi, Book of
Malachi, Book of. Minor Prophet. The author emphasizes the love of God for His people, which is reciprocated only with insincere worship and unworthy practices by the priests, and he announces that a day of judgement will surely come. The language and thought of the Book are of the age following the Exile (i.e. after 538 BC). The prophecy about the messenger who shall prepare the way of the Lord (3: 1) is applied to John the Baptist (Mk. 1: 2), while the reference to the ‘pure offering’ in 1: 11 is taken in Christian tradition as a prophecy of the Eucharist.
