Maitland
Maitland ♂, ♀ Transferred use of the surname, which is of uncertain origin. It may have arisen from a nickname for an ungracious individual, from Anglo-Norman French maltalent, mautalent ‘bad temper’ or possibly it denoted someone from Mautalant, a place in Pontorson, France, which was named for its unproductive soil.
