Maitland, Australia, Canada 1. Australia (New South Wales): founded as a settlement for convicts in 1818, it was first known simply as The Camp, then Molly Morgan Plains and then Wallis Plains. In 1829 a new town was surveyed nearby and called Maitland. This became East Maitland when Wallis Plains was renamed West Maitland in 1835. When these two, together with other nearby towns, were amalgamated in 1944 the resulting city was called Maitland. The British lieutenant‐governor of Nova Scotia, Canada (1828–34) and previous lieutenant‐governor of Upper Canada (1818–28), General Sir Peregrine Maitland (1777–1854), may be the man honoured.2. Maitland ♂, ♀ Transferred use of the surname, which is of uncertain origin. It may have arisen from a nickname for an ungracious individual, from Anglo-Norman French maltalent, mautalent ‘bad temper’ or possibly it denoted someone from Mautalant, a place in Pontorson, France, which was named for its unproductive soil.

Maitland

Maitland city (1991 pop. 45,209), New South Wales, SE Australia, on the Hunter River. It is a railroad junction and agricultural center with light manufacturing. Maitland began as a convict settlement in 1824. The river has flooded in 1893, 1949, and 1955.
