Maebashi

Maebashi

Maebashi, Honshū/Japan Umayabashi ‘Before the Bridge’ from mae ‘before’ and hashí ‘bridge’. Its previous name, ‘Stable Bridge’, gave way to the present name some time in 1596–1615. It probably refers to a bridge over the Tone River along which the city lies.

Maebashi

Maebashi , city (1990 pop. 286,261), capital of Gumma prefecture, central Honshu, Japan, on the Tone River. Now a silk textile center, it was formerly the castle town of the Matsudaira clan.
