Macquarie
Macquarie, Australia 1. Australia (New South Wales): a lake named after Lachlan Macquarie (1761–1824), a Scottish‐born Army officer who, while commanding the 73rd Regiment (later the 42nd and 73rd the Black Watch) assumed the appointment of governor of New South Wales in 1809. Within four years he had been promoted to major general; he remained governor until 1821.2. Pacific Ocean: an island belonging to Tasmania, Australia, it was first sighted in 1810 and named after Lachlan Macquarie.

Macquarie river, 590 mi (950 km) long, rising in the Blue Mts., E New South Wales, Australia, and flowing NW to the Darling River. It flows through an important sheep- and wheat-raising area. |
